Snorkelling is a popular activity around Guanacaste’s coastline. It is important to understand however that water conditions can be very different from those you are used to at home. We have put together some general advice to help you enjoy Costa Rica’s waters:
• Never swim alone, under the influence of alcohol or directly after a meal.
• Always snorkel with another person (buddy) and ensure you stay together and keep a close eye out for each other.
• Be aware that snorkelling can be a strenuous physical activity, even in calm water, and this may increase the health and safety risks for people suffering from underlying medical conditions.
This includes any condition that may be made worse by physical exertion (such as heart disease, asthma and lung disease), any medical condition that can result in loss of consciousness (such as epilepsy or diabetes), or having a low level of personal fitness due to age or physical condition.
Some medical conditions, such as asthma and respiratory disease, may also be aggravated simply through exposure to cold water or saltwater mist.
Do not underestimate the exertion involved which may be exacerbated by breathing irregularly or harder than usual through the snorkel.
Older persons are more likely to suffer from diagnosed and undiagnosed medical conditions.
If you cannot swim or have not snorkelled before or have any concerns, talk to your snorkelling supervisor or snorkelling guide before entering the water.
Use a flotation advice and practise in shallow water before venturing further out.
• If you are asked by the organised to complete a medical declaration prior to the snorkelling activity you should be honest about any medical issues as this will dictate the advice provided by the resort staff or guides.
• Wearing protective clothing such as Lycra body suits or wetsuits can act as valuable sun protection and also protects against stings and scrapes.
• Please note that it is illegal to take marine life such as coral, shells and sea stars. Do not stand on, kick or rest on coral - even rocks and dead looking coral is alive and fragile.
