Description

Rio Celeste Waterfall the gorgeous Rio Celeste waterfall has been recognized as one of the seven natural wonders of Costa Rica.

This hidden gem is located in the Tenorio Volcano National Park in the northern mountains of Costa Rica.

The turquoise water of this river attracts every year thousands of adventurous that enjoy hiking, it is not every day that you see a river of this color, with incredible views and surrounded by exuberant vegetation and wildlife.

Early morning, the guide will be waiting for you at the selected hotel to take the transportation to the Tenorio Volcano National Park (2 hours and 30 minutes ride), you will be driving on peaceful roads that connects some isolated small villages, inhabited by friendly people who you will love to meet.

Access to the waterfall is through the tropical rainforest in a moderate 3-hours hike of 5.5 km, along a wild path where it is possible to observe different species of birds and mammals that surrounds the jungle. The first stop will lead you the breathtaking waterfall. A short climb down 250 stairs gets you to a viewing platform, is a bit tough but the result is definitely worth it.

The intense blue color of this waterfall looks like something out of a fairytale but is absolutely real and you can see it up close.

The hike continues to different attractions, such as a beautiful look-out point where you will be able to admire the surrounding mountains. The blue lagoon is a quiet section of the river which is the perfect place for the photos.

Rio Celeste Waterfall in the last two attractions your will be witness of the volcanic activity; at the Borbollones you will see gases escaping from under the water and at the “Teñideros”, you will see the specific point where two rivers join and the water gets its show-stopping hue from a chemical reaction between volcanic minerals. After the hike, enjoy a typical lunch in a local restaurant at Bijagua Village, a charming colorful place to get an immersion into the true Costa Rican rural life with its plantation fields, grazing cattle and cheese factories, all around rolling hills and rushing creeks.
